My LIB Talent Show Winning Act

My LIB Talent Show Winning Act

California’s Lightning in a Bottle Festival went digital for the first time last spring, inviting longtime talent show producers The Grand Artique to come along for the ride. I eagerly signed up for the first ever virtual version and, with production assistance from Denver video virtuoso Danny Fantastic, emerged victorious with my hydration PSA “Water is Your Friend.” On the eve of LIB’s second digital festival, remind yourself of the importance of adequate hydration via the studio version of my winning act.

Oregon Eclipse Craigslist Ad

Wanted: woman who wants to conceive child during totality eclipse in OR

I am 40 years of age, caucasian male from Europe.

My looks, instinct, knowledge and strength is 100% pure and 100% lethal.

I am looking for a worthy female with strong genes, beauty and smarts. To join me – to experience totality eclipse in Oregon.

Exact place not set.

If we have chemistry, I would like for us to make love while the eclipse is happening.

When totality occurs, we will have simultaneous orgasms and we will conceive a child that will be on the next level of human evolution.

We will make love together, with me and my penis directed towards the sun. Everything will be aligned in the local universe. Both of our cosmic orgasmic energy will be aligned with the planets.

In a brief moment of ecstasy, we will understand everything, and together, create a new universe. Full of love...

You must like cats. Drugs are OK. Nitrous Oxide while we climax and experience totality and conception is OK with me.

Virtual Talent Show Victory

Virtual Talent Show Victory

Yesterday was a fantastic first. Lightning in a Bottle, a California-based gathering that’s always wowed IRL (but was forced to cancel the 2020 physical iteration because of COVID), is hosting its first virtual festival this weekend and, aside from a few expected technical glitches (and awkward transitions), is proving itself a serious contender in the virtual festival space. Western-themed interactive environment Grand Artique hosted a virtual version of its annual talent show on day two (Saturday), and I got the distinct honor of being a contestant. Denver video guru and fellow musician Danny Fantastic hooked up a beautiful set, relevant visuals and mood lighting for my acoustic performance of original hydration mantra “Water is Your Friend” - complete with gargle solo. I rarely get nervous these days, but I definitely had butterflies. Turns out there were 1600 plus viewers tuned into LIB’s Twitch stream at the time. Although there were other incredible performances, including acts from Sethward, Honeycomb, Human Fountains, Star Leopard, Sootsie and more, The Grand Artique’s panel of judges crowned your favorite singing, guitar-slinging Nemo impersonator the virtual victor. As the French-accented judge Dr. Joy put it, “In Paris, there is nothing better than sex. Actually, maybe one thing: stinky cheese. I give you stinky cheese, my friend!” I could not have been more elated with the entire experience.

Ten Years with Insomniac

Ten Years with Insomniac

The 2018 edition of Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas will mark my tenth straight year performing for global EDM promoter Insomniac Events. In 2009, Insomniac Entertainment Director MsEasy invited me to join her team of Murder and Rodeo Clowns at the LA Coliseum for EDC’s flagship L.A. incarnation, and I've been involved ever since. I've inhabited a menagerie of characters in the past decade, in far flung locales including Brazil, China, India, Japan, London, Mexico, Puerto Rico and all over the U.S. Below is a laundry list of highlights to date (plus a special announcement about my role in this year’s tentpole event):

Being summoned to Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella's Park City VIP table as he was telling wife Holly Madison about my orange peel sculptures

Buzzing over Headliner heads as a giant purple bee

Careening around on jumping stilts as a florescent orange Furbie

Channeling Jimi Hendrix as a ukulele-playing, stilt-enhanced Marching Band Clown

Chauffeuring New Yorkers and Bay Area residents around in pedicabs and lady bug golf carts

Clowning around onstage with skateboard-riding members of LMFAO in Seattle

Dragon Knights stilt performers straddling the saddle of my four-legged stilt unicorn

Entertaining Pasquale’s daughter Rainbow with my Beanie Baby stilt pants at Sundance premiere

Filming EDC China trailer footage on the seventh floor balcony of Shanghai's W Hotel

Flailing the abnormally long slinky-like arms of Wildchild World's Slinky Stilts costume

Frolicking around Electric Forest as an ukulele-playing, jumping stilt-enabled Pan

Galloping over Forest family as a nine-foot tall, four-legged stilt zebra

Getting high fived by Pasquale after dancing EDC Brazil main stage as a Bee Boy

Having my balloon headpiece popped from behind by a confetti canon at Electric Forest

Hosting EDC Town Post Office as a Hunter S. Thompson-inspired Postmaster

Hugging Orlando attendees as a walking stuffed animal-esque pink octopus

Interviewing Pasquale, MsEasy and Insomniac Creative Director Bunny Eachon for Vegas Seven Magazine

Lassoing unsuspecting Headliners from atop stilts as a Rodeo Clown

Nodding off atop stilts in India

Orchestrating a main stage crowd-blanketing spiderweb in London

Partying at Insomniac HQ with my beloved fellow Insomniac Entertainers

Personifying Super Mario on jumping stilts at Electric Forest

Piloting an inflatable dinosaur in Puerto Rico

Pole vaulting over festie besties as a four-legged stilt tree

Providing a mobile backdrop for the Red Queen and her royal entourage as a four-legged rosebush

Puffing on a hookah and reciting nonsense as a giant foam caterpillar

Roller skating with the EDC Roller Girls

Scaring the bejesus out of EDC LA patrons as an axe-wielding Murder Clown

Serenading a VIP stranger with my original song "Butterflies" during main stage set break in Mexico

Squirting Bunny with my enema as forearm crutch-assisted Stilt Grandpa

Stilting in the sand at EDC Japan’s beach stage

Swallowing unsuspecting Headliner heads as a Muppet-inspired stilt fish

Tapping Halloweeners on the shoulder with my bony, animatronic Stilt Witch hands

Terrifying Escape patrons from my antique wheelchair as a Psych Patient

Wearing prosthetic rabbit mask and fur pants on jumping stilts

Though I've been singing and playing ukulele as a stilt clown for years, not to mention leading performer shuttle sing-alongs, I'd never gotten booked to perform amplified music at an Insomniac event – until now. I'm beyond ecstatic to announce that I'll be playing EDM unplugged in a VIP speakeasy called The Blind Owl at EDC Vegas 2018. Brace yourself for acoustic renditions of hits from Avicii, Benny Benassi, Black Eyed Peas, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk, David Guetta, Disclosure, Moby and Zedd. My set times for each night are as follows:

Friday: 9 pm - 12 am - 3 am
Saturday: 8 pm - 11 pm - 2 am
Sunday: 10 pm - 1 am - 4 am

Symbiosis Gathering

Symbiosis Gathering

California's Symbiosis Gathering has something going for it that few festivals do: a body of water. This year's installment transpires at the 2900-acre Woodward Reservoir just north of Oakdale. Whereas Burning Man has art cars, Symbiosis has art boats. And mermaids. Mermaids who perform mermaid burlesque or “mer'lesque,” regale the children of Symbiosis with ocean stories and even swim in the reservoir. Mike Gaines, ringmaster for San Francisco's Vau de Vire Society, is the man who contracts the scaly beauties.

Gaines spent a stint in Fort Collins once. “I moved to Fort Collins from Southern California, where I'd grown up. I was on my way to medical school but needed to live in Colorado for a year to qualify for in-state tuition. In that time, I started working in film, and became addicted to the art and process of live production. Then I found an old church and decided to forego med school and look into opening an school for film and dance.”

Wanderlust

I was never a Deadhead. I never followed Jerry Garcia and company around the country in a VW Microbus. But I would consider following Wanderlust in Deadhead fashion (Volkswagen's new electric Microbus would be fitting transportation). The yoga lifestyle festival is the largest in the world, with incarnations in Vermont, California, Canada, Australia and Colorado. Wanderlust returns to to its current Colorado home-base in Aspen/Snowmass June 30 through July 3.

“Wanderlust is an opportunity to choose your own adventure and live it in a beautiful, natural location,” said Wanderlust co-founder Jeff Krasno. “We look forward to bringing people together to celebrate, exchange ideas and experience the good things in life.”

Ground Control

Water is your friend. Especially when you're dancing for hours on end in desert heat. But it's not uncommon for EDC attendees to neglect hydration amidst the deluge of sensory overload that is Electric Daisy Carnival. Fortunately, Laura Newton and her Ground Control minions have your back.

“We like to make it rain free water,” says Newton. “Last year, it was 114 degrees. They're in Vegas. I can't imagine they're eating healthy and staying sober in their hotels. They're partying beforehand. They're going to pool parties, and being in the sun dehydrates you. And then dancing for hours.”

Dede Flemming's party instincts were evident at a young age.

“My brothers and I would jump around on the furniture like madmen anytime Quiet Riot's 'Cum on Feel the Noize' would come on,” remembers the DoLab co-founder. “It was epic and our parents hated it.”

Go-go dancers are like motivational coaches for the dance floor. Even before the majority of inhibitions are lubricated away by booze, go-gos are already going to town on boxes adjacent to the DJ booth. Go-Go Soapbox highlights individual dancers in different cities. DJs may get paid hundreds or thousands more, but go-go dancers have become instrumental to electronic music performance. On the occasion of the fourteenth annual Global Dance Festival at Red Rocks, there is no more appropriate subject than the event's queen bee, Triad Dragons' Performing Arts Director Ms Easy.

EDC UK

I'm an Electric Daisy carny. That's the opening line of a song I penned on the flight to London last year for the inaugural UK edition of Electric Daisy Carnival. And it's true. I've been entertaining EDC festies since 2009, when the main event still took place at the LA Coliseum. From Chicago to Puerto Rico, I've performed in every market the EDM carnival has transpired in. How could I skip EDC's first trip across the pond?

Envision Festival in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a biodiverse place. Five percent of the world's plants and animals call the relatively small Central American country home. Still, you'll rarely see a zebra in Costa Rica—especially since the government announced plans to shutter its public zoos in recent years. Envision Festival attendees experienced an exception last Sunday morning when a quad stilt version of the stripey African steed ambled through the crowd during Random Rab's sunrise set, climaxing on stage with a game of Pin the Tail on the Zebra beneath the sizable driftwood jaguar above.
